How did someone within the Jays dugout not spot the offensive messages?
“He’s always writing something, I did not notice,” stated Edwin Encarnacion. “We use that word every single day within our culture. It isn't offensive. I don’t think Yunel made it happen to offend anybody.”
Manager John Farrell stated Escobar is often writing a note across his eye black, usually inspirational.
“When I saw the image Monday mid-day, I had been surprised, disappointed,” Farrell told reporters. “I understood this would be considered a large problem.”
Another veteran Latin in uniform, who didn’t want his title used, stated that although “maricon” is frequently used among Latin gamers and isn't considered an insult, he added “that’s our country; we’re not within our country any more. They must have told him he couldn't do this.”
Farrell stated Escobar unsuccessful to satisfy a player’s “minimum degree of professionalism,” or show respect for the overall game and respect for that fans who watch it.
Farrell recommended he'll “strongly recommend” to Escobar: ‘Don’t write anything’ on his eye black peel off stickers.
Anthopoulos stated both he and authorities within the commissioner’s office were worried about educating Escobar along with other gamers.
The Jays GM told The Fan 590 that Escobar was “stupid, selfish, shameful, insensitive.”
“He made their own mattress and that he knows it,” Anthopoulos stated. “I’m not likely to have a pity party for him. He did what he did. They know what he did was incredibly stupid and wrong.”
Anthopoulos stated he considered delivering Escobar.
“In the house, we call (one another) that word every 20 seconds,” stated Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen. “I’ve got three kids. For all of us, its like ‘What’s up, bro? What’s up, dude?’ It’s the way you say it and also to whom you say it.
“That’s our country. We must respect America. Sometimes for all of us it’s funny, for some individuals it isn't.”
